Report from the 2nd french NUI meeting February 21, 2009 @ 15H in Paris .

A dozen participants

Developpers (AS3,AAASEE,C++,PureData), Game Developper, Researcher, Artists, Designers, Project Manager, Industrial Designer (Physical Computing), Interactive & Eye snatching solution providers

CONTENTS

1 - How to create apps ?
- Interaction Schematics / Interaction syntax
- Learn the new ways of interaction ( MT solutions) , unlearn the WIMP
- MT is a social object
- Intuitive content for general audience versus Specifics Tasks for Profesionnal Use
- Frameworks ? : needs of basic bricks to create content upon. Freeing designer minds
- Action should apply on objects with self inner contents
- Cons of MT , no users detection (so every one paint with the same color )

2- Testing “Atlas des Ressources - App by Muchomedia
- A geo-navigation through a world map of energy resources

3 -Testing DSI prototype
Quick test of the DSI proto by Eric
Installation of the last PS3 driver and Tbeta test version for PS3 in less than 5 mn (!!!)
this DSI test ,under that shaky and unstable environnment , seems absolutly doable

4 -Testing Projet CV lib

JYG showcased his PureData Project using the OpenCv and Fiducial libs . that means you can can play music by (literrally) drawing (squares, circles) on a sheet of paper and triggering pre recorded sounds using fiducials . He also added a paper interface (with 3 black rectangles on it ) for play , trigger and position select of sounds .

Conclusion

That was definitly a great meeting, such a panel of “multi-horizons” attendees provides a wide angle of understanding and field experiences . It seems clear that the lack of great Framework for multitouch (that could free minds from solve basic programmation tasks) still asphyxiate the creation of great contents .

- next meeting ? a TouchCamp on March 21st in Paris @ La Cantine Numérique

Hi jimihertz and laurent,
ok for me too. I can bring my MT (as it’s not yet a table, I’ve just to build a safe support before the february 21st).

For the program, we can have :
- an workshop around “building his own miniMT”, great for newbies. And after speech about the technique we used, or plan to use (which material, projection surface...)
- a state of tracking app (which one on which setup, os… )
- a state of the “MT operating system” (I don’t know how to call it, for example http://www.ingenieursonline.co.uk/ )
- a state of the app (last build and testing on our setup)

What do you think ?

hey there,

I’ll try to be there too, as i wanted to meet you jimi for a long time now wink

I won’t be able to bring anything coz i’m just switching to my new apple laptop (and can’t find any good flash ide). Anyway, i’ll be glad to show what i’m doing, explaining some as3 code of my project, and showing some good framework which could be very usable for some MT projects, and can have a look on how to handle multitouch events with the TUIO framework. I have a SPC900NC with IR lens, but i really dunno how to control it, since apple didn’t bring any way to handle third party webcam natively (goddamn it) ; i’ll bring it anyway.
