Hello everyone, just a month ago I presented myself in this topic. I’m new to multitouch technologies and here is my nuigroup’s debut, my first setup.

Hardware

So, to build this setup we have used 10x 2x15 meters each crystal acrylic panels with adhesive blasted film. To provide IR illumination enough to cover the entire panel, we have worked in partnership with a brazilian company called RF Partner, that has built 20 meters of high bright class B laser infrared led bars, and also their power sources. These bars covered the top and bottom sides of the panel.

The back-projection has been done using 10 Sanyo XP100 projectors. To optimize space, we have used mirrors with cross projection: the top projector handled the bottom screen, and vice versa. The interface was handled by 11 computers, 1 for each projector, and the server. They were half mac half pc, all of them running windows 7 32 bits. To handle the heavy communication, a gigabit network was installed using just 2 switches and a bunch os wires. All the machines had fixed ip.

The infrared detection has been handled by 10 PS3-Eye cameras modified using peauproductions 850nm ir pass filters and mounts (thanks Nolan and UPS!). We have used 3.6mm lenses from 2.3 meters distance from the screen.

Software

For each projector, we have assigned a computer with CL-Eye Driver running CCV 1.3, Flash Socket Policy Server, and adobe flash running fullscreen on Google Chrome, downloading updated files directly from our apache http server.

To provide good communication between all the flash applications, we have installed Smartfox server and used its actionscript 3 client to integrate our applications. Besides that, we have used Fisix Engine to simulate physics effects of the ball.

The responsible for the whole thing was Unistudio, an advertising and innovation agency from São Paulo, Brazil. Illustration was provided by Stein Luz. The lounge architect was Gilberto Criscuolo. Cenography by Grupo A

Special thanks to Marina Zveibil from Apple Brazil, Fauser Gustavo from RF Partner, Flavio Muniz and Gustavo Nassif from Unistudio, Ulisses and Orlando from Pier Mauá IT, and Nolan from Peauproductions.

Thanks!

Hello zviangi,
we have employed 10 cameras, one for each computer+projector. That has appeared to be the most safe, cheap and expansive mode, because each computer takes account of just one camera, and it’s not needed to use multiple camera support drivers. The best of all is that it is modular, so we could build a double size setup without needing to change the hardware.

Thanks!

ah, yes, I missed this in the first post.

what about the IR laser bars? how are they constructed (how many, what lens/line generator...)?

So, it’s not exactly a laser. We have used IR LEDs that use class B laser technology. I’ve missed the part name of this led and I am here at the installation, I’ll need to get back to office to find the part name. Today is the last day. I’ll post the part name Asap, it’s cool that it’s not an expensive led, but it is very bright and reaches long distance. We have used 2000 LEDs, one per centimeter. The 25 centimeters circuit has been built using printed circuits our engineer from RF Partner has designed. Then everything has been solded and 10x 45V fonts have been also customly built. The led bars have been put inside of alumminium U format trails, forming 2 meters independent bars.

I am looking to create something on a slightly smaller scale that can be taken round to events. It’s to run a digital graffiti wall setup - and to use it for collaborative brainstorm tyoe activities. Idea is to use multitouch and also an IR spray can (for the graffiti bit)
I’m looking for help, advice and ideas for the best way to do this. Gabriel - your setup looks amazing! I’m looking to have something that runs from one PC and one camera with a screen size of about 8ftx6ft -or as close as possible. If there is anyone in the UK - Birmingham ideally - who might be interested in helping me out… get in touch!
